10 Overlooked Home Maintenance Tasks
In the 20-odd years I’ve remodeled, I’ve seen a lot of homes. I see the same overlooked home maintenance tasks over and over. For that reason, the home maintenance tasks I cover in this post are consistently overlooked, from plain dirty to won’t even work anymore. This is an excellent post for you to keep your home a healthy place to live and maintain its value.
Why Is Home Maintenance Important?
There are home maintenance tasks you may be overlooking – as a homeowner or a renter – that you can do to make your home cleaner. In this post, I will cover ten overlooked home maintenance tasks. As a result, these tasks will save you money, make the air inside your home healthier, and make you feel good about your home.
10 Tips For Overlooked Home Maintenance Tasks
1. Furnace Filters
Change your furnace filters monthly or more often. Monthly should be often enough for the average home. However, if you have many indoor pets or your home isn’t cleaned regularly, you may need to change your filters more often. I have a reminder on my phone to remind me every 30 days to change my furnace filter.
2. Water Near Your Foundation
Keep water away from the foundation of your home. This is a huge problem I see regularly: the dirt next to the home’s foundation has settled. But the thing is, you do NOT want water to set against the foundation. Check your home for this, and if you find that the ground around your home doesn’t allow water to drain quickly away, it’s time to remedy the situation.
3. Gutter Downspouts
Secondly, gutter downspouts ending at the foundation. It is practically a daily occurrence that I see. The downspout gutter runs down the side of the home and then ends. So, all the water dumps right out at your foundation.
4. Bath Fans
Clean your bath fans. You can’t believe how many bath fans I have to replace just because they have never been cleaned. If your bath fan isn’t running correctly, the shower moisture isn’t getting out of your bathroom, which causes mold and mildew.
5. Caulk in your shower
All the corners in your shower should be caulked with caulk that matches your grout. Therefore, it needs to be maintained so water doesn’t get behind the shower. This will cause mildew and mold.
6. Dryer Vent
Clean your dryer vent. A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard, and a nearly clogged vent causes a load of clothes to take forever to dry.
7. Appliances
Dishwashers are the worst. There is a filter in most dishwashers that needs to be cleaned regularly. The seal around the dishwasher door should be wiped down often. Next, is the vent hood that is often caked with grease. If you don’t know how to clean your appliances properly, visit GoCleanCo on Instagram, she will teach you how to get them clean!
8. Vacuum Cleaner
Clean up your vacuum cleaner. When your vacuum is clean, it will run so much better. If you want to learn how to clean your vacuum, search for a YouTube video on cleaning your brand and model or watch a GoCleanCo tutorial on Instagram.
9. Change Filters
Anything that has filters should be cleaned monthly. This includes smaller things like dehumidifiers, air purifiers, space heaters, etc. Use a soft horse hair brush attachment to get the gunk off. To do an in-depth cleaning, refer to the user manual. Have you lost your user manual? Search google for it!
10. Fans
Ceiling fans and box fans are usually dirty and can benefit from a good cleaning.
Closing
In conclusion, a home in top-notch condition isn’t something that happens on its own. It requires maintenance, cleaning, and some work on behalf of the homeowner. Although, your home is worth it. As a bonus, selling your home will bring top dollar because it has been well maintained. I highly recommend using the reminder app on your phone to set up reoccurring reminders to take care of the ten overlooked home maintenance tasks I’ve outlined in this post. Your stuff will work better and last longer, saving you money. Your home will be cleaner and healthier to live and breathe in. And finally, you will feel good about yourself and your home. These tasks can be therapeutic to do. We could all use a little of that to make us feel better about ourselves and our home!
