The Five Best Home Remodel Tips To Keep You Sane
When my girls were younger and learning to adult, I would always give them advice so they wouldn’t make the same mistakes I did. In the same way, I’m giving you advice so you won’t make some of my mistakes when remodeling. I promise if you follow these 5 home remodel tips, you’ll enjoy your home remodeling project a lot more!!
Why Are These Home Remodel Tips Important?
Remodeling is hard. It’s dirty and loud, and strangers come and go from your home. On top of that, you are displaced, thrown off your routine, and you are expected to keep up with your regular life! In this blog post, I’m sharing five tips to keep you sane during your next home remodeling project.
Home Remodel Tips
Make All Design Choices Before Any Work Begins
I’ve put this at the top because it is the most important thing you can do to help make your remodel more enjoyable. During a remodel, one of your roles is to make decisions as unforeseen things arise. For example, if the shower rots the subfloor, do you want to patch that spot, or do you want to replace all the subfloor? That type of thing. When you are asked to make decisions about things you don’t have a lot of knowledge about, it’s tiring. Can you imagine making those decisions along with shopping and making design decisions?! And don’t forget, you’ve still got your regular life going on. So make all the design choices before any work begins; you’ll thank me for this one later.
Pick A Great Contractor
But won’t a great contractor be hard to find? Yep. And it’ll be worth every phone call and job site visit you make to check references. (Side note: don’t just call people the contractor has done jobs for, contact the contractor’s vendors and banker.)
Read Your Contract
Make sure you understand what it says. If you don’t, find someone to help you. For example, it’s better to pay for an hour of an attorney’s time now than pay for a court battle later.
Read The Specifications
The specifications should tell you precisely what you are getting. For example, it should spell out what flooring is: the manufacturer, the name, the color, and the size. Specifications should be for every single item. If you haven’t selected flooring, you should have an allowance. Is it large enough to cover what you want if there is an allowance?
Make Plans For How To Live With The Mess
It helps a lot if, going into the process, you have your brain wrapped around how dirty your house will get and how you will deal with it. Then, discuss this with your contractor.
Closing
If I had to sum up this article, it would be to plan and prepare for your remodel. I covered things that will go a long way toward keeping you sane when you remodel. Make all your design choices before the project starts, pick a great contractor, read your contract, read the specifications, and make plans for how to live with the mess. Doing these things has been real game-changers for my clients and me.
