3 Easy Steps To Make Remodel Decisions
Making remodel decisions can be tiring, especially when it comes to something as big as remodeling your home. Whether you’re remodeling your entire home or even just a small bathroom, having decision fatigue while remodeling is something everyone suffers from.
I’ve been working with clients to remodel their homes for over 20 years, so I know how many decisions there are to make. I quickly understood that I needed to find a solution to make the decision-making process easier and faster. I’ve personally used this strategy myself to avoid becoming overwhelmed with remodeling decisions in my own remodeling projects.
By following a few simple steps, you can avoid dreaded decision fatigue without agonizing over every little detail, which wastes so much time and drives you crazy. Here are three easy steps to help you get started.
Choose A Focal Point
The first step is to pick a focal point. But, what exactly does this mean? Let’s say you’re remodeling your primary bathroom. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when I ask what you’re most looking forward to from the project? I want your gut reaction here; that is going to be the most honest answer.
Your quick answer is your focal point! For the sake of this example, let’s pretend you are most looking forward to a gorgeous new tile in your shower. This means that tile is what you are going to focus your time and energy on.
Schedule An Appointment
Next, schedule an appointment to start making your focal point a reality. Following the last example, if you choose tile for your bathroom, you’ll want to schedule an appointment at your local tile store. Once there, you can show the staff your inspiration photos and have them help you find tiles that match the look you want to achieve. If you’re unsure, buy a couple of pieces for a sample.
Then, take your samples and inspiration photos with you when you look for your vanity cabinet, hardware, countertop, flooring, paint, lights, and any other design elements for your bathroom. Let the inspiration photos guide you if you have no idea where to start for those things.
The trick is not to spend hours agonizing over each of those things. Instead, pick things that look good with and support the star of your room: whether that’s a shower tile or some other element you’ve decided on.
Create A Mood Board
The last step is to create a mood board. This can be as simple or as detailed as you want it to be. If you are even slightly handy on a computer, you can make one yourself. For example, below is one I created for a primary bath remodel using the pages program on my MacBook Pro.
Having a mood board is a great way to find exactly what you need. For example, you can take your board into a store, hand it to a staff designer, and say, “Please show me all of the tiles you have that most closely match this.” That way, you aren’t walking around all over the store, getting overwhelmed and distracted by all the choices.
Conclusion: Eliminating Decision Fatigue
Remodeling your home can be a daunting task, but by following these three easy steps, you can significantly reduce the stress and decision fatigue that often comes with it. When making remodel decisions, remember to always keep your focal point in mind and let it guide your decisions instead of harping too long on one element of your redesign.
