How To Tell Contractors What You Want
One of the most annoying and disheartening things is discovering that your contractors didn’t remodel your bathroom to make it look like you thought it would, and then you have to settle.
If you’re like most people, the thought of talking to a contractor makes your palms sweat and your heart race. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. If you arm yourself with the correct information, it’s actually relatively easy to tell a contractor what you want. In this post, I’ll teach you how to ensure you get the remodel YOU want!
Find And Print Your Inspiration Photo
The first step is to find a photo of what you want your bathroom to look like. This could be a photo from Pinterest, Houzz, or even a magazine. Once you’ve found your inspiration photo, buy some photo paper and print them out. By using a good, heavy paper, it serves two purposes. First, it holds up better as you carry it around while the installer looks at it while working. Second, it just looks more professional. It says that you are serious about this remodel and want great results.
Example 1
In this first example, I am showing the tile setter how I want to wrap the corner of the shower wall using white metal edging on the right outside corner and how it will be running into a piece of wooden trim on the left outside corner. When I first request the bid, I’ll use this photo to ensure they can appropriately estimate the project.
The day before the installer begins, I’ll hang this same photo by his workspace. Then, after the waterproofing is complete, I will go over the picture with him again before the tile-laying has begun. Throughout the process, I’ll continue to check back to ensure I’m seeing what I want.
Example 2
In this photo, I am showing the tile setter:
- How I want the ledge across the back of the shower (this should be framed up when the tile setter gets there to the height you want – usually do 40-42″)
- The way I want to use the metal edging on the outside corner
- That I will already have the edging purchased and ready for him to install
- How I want to place the accent tile
